Hi, I'm The Mushroom Lady and I grow mushrooms...and spirulina...and microgreens!
I started growing mushrooms about 6 years ago with a grow your own kit. It took a long time to step up my game with sterilising, pressure cookers, agar, grow tents, humidifiers and a whole bunch of jars.
I'm not an expert but I know what I've learnt so far and hopefully I can teach you too! I think growing your own food at home is one of the most rewarding and radical things you can do. It doesn't have to be hard, expensive and doesn't need a lot of space. There doesn't seem to be much in between pre-made grow kits and turning your home into a complete farm/laboratory. Not everyone has the time, space or money for specialist equipment so I'm hoping to solve that a little bit!
In my dream world, every home would have a little corner dedicated to growing food. There are lots of elaborate systems you can buy but they cost hundreds of pounds. I think that you can be an urban farmer with a bit more of DIY approach.
It's very important to me that any new ideas we put out into the world have longevity. Repair, reuse and recycle is the philosophy behind my business. As a permaculturist and vegan, I aim to create processes and systems that work with, and not against the natural flow of life and decay. We can cycle the waste of one process into the foundation of another process.
I'm the first UK seller of spirulina algae culture for hobbyist growers. When I started cultivating arthospira platensis I had to import the culture from Europe and the shipping fees made my eyes water. I hope that more people in the UK can enjoying learning about and growing algae at home.
So come to me if you're a beginner or you want to learn more about growing your own interesting things indoors.
I'm not going to sell you a lifestyle or a fancy expensive system. I am just selling some bits and bobs in manageable pieces so you don't have to spend so much time or money.
Thanks!
